Afghan Rulers Employed Left-Behind UK Equipment to Locate Afghans That Served With Allied Troops, Inquiry Learns
A whistleblower has disclosed a parliamentary probe that the UK failed to secure sensitive equipment enabling the Taliban to track down local individuals who worked with western forces.
Information Leak Endangers Thousands in Danger
The whistleblower, identified as Person A, explained that Afghans affected by the data leak were told to relocate and switch their mobile numbers to protect themselves from militant forces.
Members of Parliament are currently examining the UK government's response of a serious breach of confidential data concerning approximately 19k individuals who had applied to move to Britain to escape the Taliban.
The Information Breach Occurred
A spreadsheet containing private information, including identities, phone numbers and occasionally relative details, was accidentally leaked by a worker working at British military command in February 2022.
The incident came to light only in August 2023, when identities of multiple applicants who had applied to move to Britain surfaced on social media.
Regime's Resources
Many believe there's a false assumption that the Taliban are without similar capabilities that western nations possess,â the whistleblower testified to the committee.
All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. If they have a contact number, they can trace your precise location. This is exactly how the unit achieved.â
When questioned about regarding if authorities possessed sophisticated technology, Person A declared: âThey've got everything.â
Consequences of the Information Leak
Initial findings submitted to the investigation estimated that at least 49 kin and associates of Afghans affected by the incident had been executed.
A legal restriction about the incident was enacted in last year and blocked relevant facts regarding the matter from being made public until mid-2025.
Safety Measures
Given injunction limitations, the source and the aid group she collaborated with told individuals at risk they were working with that they had âsuspicions that certain devices had been breachedâ.
âWe advised that they relocate if they could and altered their contact details. That constituted the primary information that, if the Taliban had access to these details, would cause them being traced,â Person A explained.
Challenged Assessments
The source contested that an official review carried out by an ex-government employee had been wrong to conclude that the possession of the records by the regime was âminimally impact current risk levelsâ.
âThe thing to remember is that these individuals are not confronting the Taliban; they are in hiding. Everything boils down to past work history.â
She detailed terrible treatment endured by concerned people, including electric shock torture, waterboarding, and severe beatings.
âInstances include young kids who have had limbs fractured to pressure the family to say where someone is,â the whistleblower revealed.
