The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, such as the pastel suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."

This news arrives just weeks after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by looks from model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting form-fitting garments established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he began working on pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including a number of outfits for her US tour following her marriage.

After a career spanning half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world laments the passing to a true visionary whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
