California is Completely Free of Drought for the First Time in 25 Years.
For the first time in 25 years, every region of the state is enduring water scarcity. This milestone arrives after difficult years marked by a lack of precipitation that exacerbated fire dangers and pressured its enormous farming industry.
An Update Indicates Zero Drought
A recent update from the U.S. Drought Monitor showed that the entire state is clear of any level of drought. This change resulted from a period of above-normal rainfall that topped up major reservoirs like Oroville and Shasta exceeding their long-term norms.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” noted a local meteorologist.
After Severe Systems to Soggy Celebrations
The path to this point involved intense and deadly winter storms that battered the state in recent years, leading to extensive inundation, blackouts, and deaths. Even though those events helped ease the drought, they did not eliminate it.
As late as late December, regions like the state's northeast corner were still classified as abnormally dry. Substantial precipitation at the start of the new year washed away those remaining dry spots.
A Crucial Snowpack Remains a Concern
However, hydrologists note that being out of drought should not be confused with complete water security. Latest data of the mountain snow accumulation indicate it is roughly seven-tenths of the typical level.
This snowpack, which supplies about a third of the state's water as it runs off, is a critical factor for long-term water security. State experts stress that it is too early to determine the outlook for the annual water supply.
“What we are observing right now is more rain than snow,” explained a hydrology section chief. “The goal is the snow accumulation to pick up by April 1st so that we’re nearer to normal.”
While the drought map indicates no dryness, attention turns to preserving this precious water balance during the months to come.
