EU finance ministers are meeting in the EU capital this Thursday to address the bloc's financial agenda, featuring the pressing question of financial support to the Ukrainian government.

Zelenskyy States Nation's Existence Relies on Allies

Kyiv's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared in a recent discussion that the country's survival depended on obtaining additional financial aid from international partners.

“I hope, God bless, we will get the necessary funding,” he told media outlets. Otherwise, “It will be necessary to seek an alternative, it’s a question of our surviving. For this reason we need it urgently. And I count on partners.”

European Authorities Pushes for €140bn Compensation Funding

The EU executive continues to aim to persuade member states – including Belgium, which is currently blocking the plan amid legal fears – to proceed with a €140bn financial compensation using Moscow's immobilized funds.

Commission president Ursula von der Leyen insisted today that this represents “the optimal method to sustain Kyiv's military and its economy.”

Decision Postponed Until Year-End Meeting

A definitive resolution on the issue has been postponed till the European Council meeting in the last month, with the funding needed early next year.

Talks Coincide with Bribery Allegations in Ukraine

But the talks come at a difficult time for Kyiv, as the president was forced to contain growing public outrage in Ukraine regarding a corruption scandal in the energy sector, dismissing two ministers who are accused of involvement in a extensive bribery scheme.

Denmark's economic affairs minister Stephanie Lose was questioned on her reaction to the allegations, and affirmed that there was determination to keep aiding the Ukrainian people.

“Naturally, Ukraine will have to continuously work with reforms, strengthening every sector of the nation [and] that also applies to fighting graft … but there shouldn’t be any doubt that Europe stands firmly with Kyiv,” she stated.
