Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
