Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD shared security footage earlier this week of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims according to reports.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a baby.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd was inactive this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in March.
