In the wake of heavy downpours that resulted in floodwaters across parts of the city, Los Angeles is now grappling with unusually hot conditions for late February.
Record-Shattering Temperatures
By Friday afternoon, the thermometer reached 91°F (33°C) in central LA, as reported by the National Weather Service. This exceeds the prior high for February 27th, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was established in the previous year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were noted on official maps for the region.
Public Health Advisories
Authorities cautioned that Friday's weather posed an "elevated risk for heat illness" for those at risk. Their advice included:
- Staying hydrated.
- Limiting outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave kids or animals unattended in a hot car.
A Dramatic Shift
This sharp rise in temperature comes on the heels of a powerful storm system that pummeled the region earlier in the week. That system unleashed thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to mountainous regions, causing evacuation orders for countless residents.
Tragically, the severe weather also resulted in a deadly avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Weekend Outlook
The outlook suggests some relief is expected. Temperatures were predicted to drop to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in downtown LA by Friday night.
Other locales that reached the 90-degree mark featured Woodland Hills, Long Beach, and Burbank. Additionally, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were forecast to experience the high eighties.
In the coming days, downtown LA can anticipate weather in the eighties, with mid-70s temperatures expected for the week ahead.
