Lando Norris Secures Maiden F1 World Championship in Abu Dhabi In Spite Of Verstappen's Race Win.

In a display of brave racing, Lando Norris has won his maiden Formula One world championship by securing a podium finish at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. That finish was all that was required for the British driver, even though his rival Max Verstappen won the race and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri finished in second.

Norris executed exactly what was needed in an extremely intense race at the Abu Dhabi track, featuring a number of bold passing maneuvers, with impeccable execution from both himself and his McLaren squad.

A Historic Accomplishment for British Motorsport and McLaren

With this his first world championship, Norris becomes the 11th British driver to achieve this. This ends the team's title drought, which stretched back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton last won it. Furthermore, it had been 27 years since McLaren last secured the drivers’ and constructors’ double back in 1998.

The Story of the McLaren

Regarding his teammate Oscar Piastri, who had been the favorite for a large part of the campaign, there was clear frustration at faltering in the later races. A series of difficult weekends and mistakes, such as a crash in Baku, were expensive. Nevertheless, he emerges having shown he is too world champion material. Being so competitive in only his third season in F1, with seven wins, remains very impressive.

Verstappen too had been exceptional to take the fight to the wire. The Dutchman did all he could in Abu Dhabi with the race victory, but after fighting back from a 104-point deficit mid-season, he did not quite have enough to catch Norris, ending up just a handful of points short.

Sealing the Deal with Clinical Precision

Norris closed out his title with ruthless focus to take the crown that had been so close but eluded him as McLaren found themselves floundering at the previous two rounds. These included a double disqualification in Las Vegas and then an egregious tactical decision in Qatar.

It was no little accomplishment for the 26-year-old in his seventh season in F1, all of them with McLaren. He remained loyal to the team even during some difficult periods, believing they would return to the top. That belief was vindicated in Abu Dhabi.

The incident was investigated by the stewards, with several impossibly tense laps passing before a time penalty for his rival and exoneration for Norris settled the matter. This decisive charge unimpeded was vital to his title fight.

Diverging Fortunes

While Norris was crowned the first Briton to take the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the contrast in fortunes between the two was stark. While the new generation battled over the title, Hamilton, the veteran, could only finish eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a disappointing conclusion to a difficult season with Ferrari.

Making his debut with the Scuderia had been greeted with excitement but produced what was comfortably his worst season ever, ending up sixth in the championship and failing to secure a podium. He has appeared weary in the closing races and will aim to rebuild over the off-season.
