Sir Gareth Southgate has declared that he is avoiding a return to football management, explaining that it would be challenging to match the higher calling he encountered as the national team coach.

The former coach indicated his aim to focus his energy toward engaging the youth and countering what he described as a pervasive negative narrative now existing in the country.

Exploring Different Paths Outside of Coaching

Speaking on air, the manager was asked about talk linking him with open coaching positions in the English football and abroad.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he answered. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

Dedication to Positive Examples

Ahead of the launch of his new title, his new work on leadership, the author stated that he is deeply committed about setting examples for teenagers, drawing on lessons from his period as leader of the England team between 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

He feels that his experience managing the squad, during which the team shifted from being deeply unpopular to greatly admired, holds broader applications.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he noted. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”

Family Life and Guiding Young People

Reflecting on his role as a parent, the coach remarked: “Parents strive to offer their children a great beginning, but eventually, kids tune out. My household is no different, but I’m convinced this is a vital focus for society.”

He went on: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Togetherness Beyond Division

The former manager stressed that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the cultural focus often emphasizes division.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he stated. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

Southgate’s forthcoming book, the book Dear England, is scheduled to present further insights on guidance and national identity inspired by his remarkable time in football.
