As any major awards ceremony approaches, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything that year
- A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences globally and have been for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
