The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this charming family navigate their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to help comedy break out of its prevailing sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to enjoy the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
