The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series by the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new introductory sequence. It features our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the music selection.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the official score of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental option, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the series will have a few surprises and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro appears as among these.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
