People have come together around the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-initiated offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The attack led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as hostages. It was the most deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister stated on that day.

He also vowed to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the release of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer create a threat to Israel".

Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel

The Israeli government postponed official remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but events still occurred across the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was broadcast across Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was observed around the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas delegations gathered in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of indirect talks to discuss the terms of the plan.

A high-ranking delegate knowledgeable about the negotiations revealed that an late session of negotiations began at evening in Egypt.

The representative explained the day's discussions ended without significant progress, amid differences over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not restart hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.

He added that the discussions are "tough and have yet to produce any real breakthrough," but noted that intermediaries are striving to close the gaps between the conflicting groups.

Essential Issues in Discussions

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The exchange of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Measures for assistance deliveries
  • Future management of the territory

Civilian Sentiment

In the city's memorial area that day, young a woman - whose sibling endured the assault on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were murdered and many more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No location seems like home any longer and until each abducted person come back none of us will have peace of mind."

"After we see everybody home again, we can feel relief again. Then we can start to rebuild," she added.

In front of the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their backing for the relatives of the captives. Israel reports 48 stay in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be living.

Demonstrator a participant explained: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement necessary for the captives to be released. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."

Surveys now frequently demonstrate that approximately 70% of the population prefer the war to end in return for the freedom of the abducted.

Gaza Situation

At the location of the music event, mourners gathered to pay their respects.

From there, the sound of aerial bombardments and shelling could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people indicated the heavy Israeli attacks continued.

In the urban center, attacks were documented in the early hours of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, sector and Nasr districts and in the eastern district of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"When the night arrives, the dread appears with it," evacuated urban resident a local woman, whose young son was died by an Israeli aerial attack previously, described.

"My family are fearful of the attacks. All the night we are lying together, embracing, particularly my smallest child who puts his face on me all night."

"Continuously we check the updates to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be completed and that the fighting will resume to us."

Health Situation

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had accepted the bodies of six people by the afternoon, including a trio killed in an Israeli strike in the south part district.

A different healthcare center in the south region of that area reported two more victims had been delivered. A person was killed by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get assistance to the south, medics reported.
