The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Leader.
It might not have been at the equivalent scale as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the onset of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life free from concern.”
The event, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, provided by a first responder, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people shouting “6-7” – originating from a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently named “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Annually, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
