The Reason Los Blancos Have 'Complete Faith' in Teenager Pitarch

Whenever a 18-year-old makes club history in a key European match against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a quarter-final place.

At 18 years old, the midfielder was the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise From The Academy

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.

He signed for Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

He worked his way up to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in January.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he added to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I began playing football, each day you head to training and each day you play a match," stated the player after his debut.

"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he spent four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has taken it with performances that have belied his age and experience.

"He's a very quick footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," said the coach. "He is extremely dynamic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.

"His standout trait is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand fans might be surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do what he usually does.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before joining the club's renowned youth academy.

He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the option to play for either country at the highest level.

According to international regulations, players may represent different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a competitive full international.

Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.

Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Diaz decided to represent the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He played over an hour in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the club pursue future success.

After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager treats me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the pitch," he commented after the win at Etihad Stadium.
