Both vessels Friendship and Tigger Moth departed Isla Mujeres, Mexico on March 20th.

A extensive search and rescue effort is currently ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of lost boats transporting relief goods en route from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.

Military Rescue Efforts Launched

Authorities in Mexico has sent naval teams and military search aircraft to find the two vessels, which were carrying a minimum of 9 personnel, per a official statement.

The vessels had been expected to arrive in Cuba's capital on the early part of the week, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their arrival, the statement clarified.

The Situation of Aid to the Island

The island nation has relied heavily on aid convoys from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the island grapples with widespread national electricity failures.

"The skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are equipped with appropriate safety equipment and communication devices," a spokesperson for the convoy said.

The nine crew members are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.

"Our team is co-operating fully with the officials and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the spokesperson added.

Previous Relief Shipment

Just days before, the government in Havana publicly celebrated and officially received a separate vessel that had carried 14 tonnes of donated goods to the country.

That ship, dubbed "a new Granma" in reference to the yacht in which Castro landed in Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar equipment, medicines, infant formula, cycles and food.

Broader International Context

Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led attempts to ship essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, coinciding with the time a energy blockade on the island nation was initiated.

The United Nations have since warned of "dire" lack of essential goods, with over 50k operations called off in Cuba due to energy rationing.

Foreign policy pressure have intensified over the past months, with statements from various officials emphasizing the complicated state of bilateral relations.

In response to certain statements, a senior government figure insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Reports suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations commenced, although their current progress remains not publicly known.

The maritime authorities affirmed it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to discover the sailboats and secure the safety of the sailors.

As of now, there has been no public statement on the lost ships by the Cuban leadership.
