Ultra-Conservative Ex- Congressman J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile Incoming Leader.
Following a conclusive final ballot, hardline politician José Antonio Kast has secured the top job in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Victory
With more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast secured 58.17% of the vote, overcoming leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third presidency, having earlier been defeated by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Platform Built On Law and Order and Immigration
Noted for his strong socially conservative views and regard for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was largely focused on promises to tackle rising crime and significantly restrict migration.
He consistently blamed migrants, especially the approximately 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for security issues. Throughout the campaign, he delivered an ultimatum for them to exit before the new term begins or face deportation.
His plans envisioned Trump-inspired measures such as building camps, border walls, perimeter fencing, and bolstering the armed forces presence on the northernmost frontier.
Part of a Broader Shift
Several observers interpret Kast's victory as aligning with a broader conservative trend in Latin America, coming after this year's electoral wins in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other experts additionally frame it as a part of the regular alternation of power between left-wing and right administrations since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Leading Lacking a Solid Majority
Despite his sweeping popular vote triumph, Kast does not command an overall majority in the legislature, not in the lower house or the Senate, even if various conservative parties are counted together.
This legislative landscape may complicate his agenda, including a promise to cut public spending by billions within a year and a half—a measure for which he has not provided a clear explanation.
"We have several things about how a Kast presidency will look like that we don't know because he has not said his methods for implement them," said a political expert.
The professor added, "On fiscal matters, it is highly probable we will see austerity policies typical of the right-wing. However the area with much less uncertainty is on law and order, because that has been his flagship issue across the campaign."
