Extreme heat and intense wildfires have devastated the parched landscape of Western Australia. With temperatures expected to persist climbing above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a severe heatwave warning has been issued across much of the southwestern region.

This situation come after this month's fires in New South Wales, which caused the loss of homes and fatalities. Intense heatwave warnings have also been issued for later this week in parts of South Australia and NSW, as a ridge of high pressure shifts to the east, delivering blazing sunshine to a broad swath of the area.

The mix of tinder-dry vegetation and unbroken high temperatures creates a volatile situation for emergency crews.

In another part of the world, a major city was left in darkness recently after strong winds compromised the city’s power grid, with toppled trees bringing down power lines. The weather conditions also led to major travel disruption at a major airport, where numerous air services were cancelled. Meanwhile, a region famed for its clear skies and abundant sunlight has experienced one of its dullest and foggiest periods on recorded history. A particular form of fog, which usually lingers for only a few days, has been remarkably extensive and persistent this year, keeping temperatures at a major airport below 8C for over a week – the longest such streak in more than three decades. The extended fog has been fuelled by exceptional autumn rainfall that left the ground waterlogged.
