Historical racism is returning to British the political arena, which makes people feel deeply uneasy, Keir Starmer warned, alerting that divisive far-right political tactics are “dividing the nation”.

Confronting Racist Rhetoric and Harmful Politics

Speaking to doctor and media figure Amir Khan, the prime minister accused Nigel Farage’s Reform UK of overseeing a return to discriminatory and divisive politics which many believed was resolved years back”.

In the interview, which aired on ITV’s Lorraine show on Tuesday, Starmer provided his strongest signal that the two-child benefit cap would be lifted during the upcoming fiscal announcement later this month.

Commitment to Combat Poverty Among Children

When questioned whether he planned to eliminate the limit, as noted by advocacy groups is the biggest driver of child poverty in the UK, Starmer said: “Let me be perfectly clear I will strive to reduce child poverty.”

He outlined steps the government has already launched including free school meals, morning meal programs, and childcare and emphasized: “We must go beyond these efforts, and I can look you in the eye that I will personally focus on reducing child poverty.”

When pressed on whether his comments meant he would lift the two-child limit, he said “I would not say we plan to reduce child poverty without being sure that measures will be introduced various actions for that purpose”.

Clear Signals from Rachel Reeves

The Chancellor, gave an equally strong hint on Monday when she told a national radio station how “in the end, children must not be punished because their parents don’t have very much money”.

Government officials are reportedly planning to scrap the restriction fully, after initially considering ways to taper it for bigger households or richer ones. An economic thinktank has estimated this would cost about £3.5bn in the coming years.

Political Divide and National Renewal

During the discussion, Starmer said the ideological split in the UK now was between the government’s vision for renewal and “the toxic division of Reform” and others on the right that are “tearing our country apart”.

“Certain language we’re hearing – discriminatory talk, polarizing language – that many assumed had been addressed in the past is returning to politics and it makes people feel fearful,” he stated.

“It is essential to oppose such discrimination, that division, and we have to proudly say that to be British involves caring for others, is about being fair, is to be tolerant and kindness, which we value deeply.”

Echoing Warnings from Wes Streeting

The prime minister echoed sentiments used by the Health Secretary, who warned earlier this month how a disturbing form of discrimination similar to past decades had become alarmingly frequent again with healthcare workers were facing the worst of it.

The health secretary said occurrences of verbal and physical abuse targeting individuals due to race had become so frequent making it “tolerated to hold racist views”.

“It is time to put a stop on racism in this country and we need to place that ugly racist sentiment that has emerged in our country where it belongs and reestablish an environment across Britain that rejects racism to be racist,” the Health Secretary stated.

Critical Decision for the Public

The Prime Minister spoke during a major political gathering this autumn to outline political battle lines with his political opponents, saying that voters faced a “defining choice”.

The prime minister said he was involved in a struggle for the nation’s identity, noting although the public expressed valid worries about illegal migration, there was an ethical boundary which some politicians had crossed.

Starmer pledged to “fight” those claiming that non-white individuals could not be English or British and that families who had lived in Britain for years should be deported, saying people promoting such views were “opposed to the country’s progress”.

“Encouraging racial attacks and hatred, that goes beyond concern: it is illegal. Our political movement is proud of our flags, yet if they are painted alongside graffiti, telling a Chinese takeaway owner to leave the country, that is not patriotism; that is pure discrimination,” he told activists.
